Nadeel: niet ingebouwd, plaatsen op de hotshoe of in elk geval zichtbaar (niet in je tas, sowieso is GPS bereik een probleem), vaak kabel nodig voor extra connectie met je camera, soms achteraf koppeling nodig tussen software en gemaakte foto's, maakt gebruik van je cameraccu en gaat dus sneller leeg, of heeft eigen accu en geheugen welke hoogstens een dag meegaat en geen hele vakantie, opstarten traag vanwege een fix vinden, binnen niet bruikbaar (geen fix mogelijk met satelietten). GPS module net als bij iPhone ingebouwd komt zelden voor.
Aandachtspunt: tijdsync GPS met fotocamera

iPhone GPS:
"When travelling, there are really two choices to get a location when you get to a new destination: (1) turn on Data Roaming briefly to speed up the process to get your location; or (2) wait until the GPS device works it out itself (which can take several minutes). The first option is quick but has a cost (albeit a small one) and the second is ‘free’ but may take a little time to get a new location."

In short, Lonely Planet’s cityguide apps use Apple’s standard iPhone location services. The GPS services we use in our cityguide apps are the same location services used by other iPhone apps with GPS capabilities.

The iPhone GPS uses satellites in order to locate you. And it uses your iPhone’s last known location to figure out where it should be able to find the nearest satellites. When you have travelled a long way your iPhone still thinks it’s at home. This causes problems when trying to figure out where you are.

The iPhone also uses A-GPS (Assisted GPS) to speed up the time it takes for locate me to locate you. However A-GPS does needs some form of data connection to find you.

When you are travelling, there are two ways to get the locate me up and running:
• turn on data roaming briefly to speed up the locate me function; or
• wait until your iPhone’s GPS can find four or more satellites (which can take a bit of time when you have travelled abroad).


All we can advise is that going to Google Maps, using locate me there, and returning to our application will clear the last known location from your phones cache and the app will locate you.

You don't have to have data roaming enabled to do this

The app is using the last know location when it cant find you - hence finding you in the wrong location.

In a similar vein, be aware that when you "Save for Web & Devices" in Photoshop, GPS information along with other metadata will be stripped out (will, not might).

Flickr Uploader (at least versions before 3.0) loses EXIF-GPS if you let it resize your image (thanks Richard!). The Free Flickr eXporter iPhoto Plugin (FFXporter) is a free iPhoto export plugin for Flickr that preserves GPS tags and other EXIF data.

Picasa will wipe altitude data if you use it to manipulate your image
